Are you embarrassed to remove your shirt in public? Are you tired of trying to hide your enlarged breasts under clothing?
Gynecomastia surgery can help you regain your masculine appearance – and restore your natural confidence.
Gynecomastia is the medical term for enlarged or over-developed male breasts. It’s common in men of all ages and can occur due to hormonal changes, hereditary conditions, diseases, and the use of certain drugs, including anti-androgens, anabolic steroids, anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications, antibiotics, cancer treatments and more.
Whatever the root cause, gynecomastia is triggered by a decrease in testosterone or an increase in estrogen – and it can lead to emotional distress and ultimately, lower your self-confidence. At False Creek Healthcare, we perform safe, effective male breast reduction surgeries in our modern Vancouver facility. This procedure removes excess fat in the chest to create a flatter and more masculine appearance.
What happens during gynecomastia surgery?
After a consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeons, your physician will make a small incision on the edge of the areola or in the underarm before removing excess fat, skin and glandular tissue from the sides and bottom of the breast.
If your gynecomastia is primarily due to excess fatty tissue, liposuction alone may be enough to complete the procedure. Several liposuction techniques are available, and your plastic surgeon will determine the best one for your body and aesthetic goals.
Excision techniques are often recommended when glandular breast tissue or excess skin also needs to be removed during the surgery. Excision is also necessary if the overall chest area will be reduced, or the nipple will be repositioned to create a more natural male contour. Incision patterns will vary depending on your body and your surgeon’s recommendations.
Your plastic surgeon will make an inconspicuous incision on the edge of the areola or in the underarm area. They will then remove the excess fatty tissue, skin, and glandular tissue from the sides and bottom of the breast.

In cases where gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction techniques alone may be used. There are various liposuction techniques that may be used; your plastic surgeon will determine the technique most appropriate to your case prior to your procedure.

Male breast reduction benefits:
- Safe, effective and proven procedure
- Higher self-confidence & self-esteem
- More masculine, athletic body shape
- Better-fitting, more flattering clothing
- Improved comfort during athletic activities
- Reduced nipple chafing & hypersensitivity
You will likely experience some post-surgical discomfort, which can be easily controlled with medication. You will also have some bruising and swelling in the breast area. Most swelling, however, will dissipate in the first few weeks. Your surgeon may recommend that you wear an elastic pressure garment for 1-2 weeks after the procedure to reduce swelling and minimize sensitivity.
Male breast reduction results
Male breast reduction surgery delivers significant, lasting results with a high level of reported satisfaction. Nearly all our patients say that the procedure has enhanced their self-esteem and improved their confidence. That means no more hiding under a t-shirt at the pool or struggling to cover up your chest in public.
While all surgical scars are permanent, they may be concealed in your natural chest contours. Additionally, please be aware that if your gynecomastia was caused by the use of certain prescription medications or drugs (including steroids and weight gain supplements), you must be completely free of these substances and your weight needs to remain stable in order to maintain your results.
Preparing for male breast reduction surgery
Your physician will provide detailed instructions to ensure that you are properly prepared for gynecomastia surgery. You will also receive guidelines on whether you need to avoid certain medications or supplements before and after your treatment.
Am I a candidate for gynecomastia?
During a one-on-one consultation, our physicians will determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for gynecomastia. Typically, good candidates are men who have:
- Good health and a stable body weight
- Realistic expectations for the procedure
- Firm, elastic skin that will adjust to new body contours
- Enlarged breasts that cause physical and/or emotional discomfort
- Over-projected nipples and areolas
- No active rashes or infections
