Blepharoplasty – Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery removes excess skin and fat to create a more youthful look

Eyelid Surgery, also known as blepharoplasty (also oculoplasty) is performed when the need to modify the eyelid due to excess skin or fat is present. This creates a more youthful look giving a rejuvenated appearance.

The eyes are one of the first features of the face to show the signs of aging. As we age, we begin to notice sagging and loose skin in the upper and lower eyelids, and these structures begin to lose their firm texture. Many feel that while the rest of their face looks youthful, their puffy eyes give away their true age, or make them look older than they are.

Blepharoplasty is a procedure designed to correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes, which can make you look older and more tired than you feel, and may actually interfere with your vision. However, it won’t remove crow’s feet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under your eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows. Blepharoplasty can also be performed in conjunction with other facial surgery procedures such as a face lift or brow lift.

Before Eyelid SurgeryAs people age, the eyelid skin streches, muscles weaken, and fat accumulates around the eyes, causing “bags”above and below.
After Eyelid SurgeryAfter surgery, the upper eyelids no longer droop and the skin under the eyes is smooth and firm.

About the Procedure

Your plastic surgeon will remove excess skin and fat through incisions following the natural lines of your eyelids. Following the natural contour of the eyelid and lash line will ensure that the incisions are well camouflaged. Excess fat may also be moved to fill hollows or troughs within the eyelid area as necessary. The procedure takes about two to four hours to perform under local anaesthesia in our private operating room, and you will be able to recuperate at home afterwards.

Eyelid surgery can be combined with erbium laser resurfacing, chemical peels, or Botox® to help you achieve flawless results in the delicate eye area.

Eyelid Surgery1. Before surgery, the surgeon marks the incision sites, following the natural lines and creases of the upper and lower eyelids.
Eyelid Surgery2. Underlying fat, along with excess skin and muscle, can be removed during the operation.
Eyelid Surgery3. In a transconjuntival blepharoplasty, a tiny incision is made inside the lower eyelid and fat is removed with fine forceps. No skin is removed, and the incision is closed with dissolving sutures.
Eyelid Surgery4. The surgeon closes the incisions with fine sutures, which will leave nearly invisible scars.
What to expect during recovery

You will be able to return home the same day as you undergo your eyelid surgery. Some mild discomfort may follow this procedure, but is easily controlled with medication and the application of cold compresses. You may also be prescribed antibiotic eye-drops and are advised to keep your head elevated for the first few days of recovery.

Sutures are removed within a few days, and you will be able to wear makeup and contact lenses within a week. You will be able to resume normal activities within ten to fourteen days, though keeping activity light will help to reduce any swelling or bruising. Scars may remain slightly pink for six months or more after the eyelid surgery, but will fade to a thin, nearly invisible white line with time.

Your New Look

Your eyes will look softer, more refreshed and rejuvenated. The skin surrounding your eye will look and feel firmer and smoother and your new, more alert and youthful appearance will last for years.
